The Bendigo Art Gallery is made up of buildings from four construction phases. The central building, now known as the Bolton Court, was constructed in 1867 by contractors Webb and Harlow to the design of the prominent Bendigo architectural firm Vahland and Getzschmann as a bichromatic brick orderly room for the local volunteer militia. The Castlemaine Art Gallery was constructed in 1930 to a design by the architects Stephenson & Meldrum. The builder was a F. Pollerd and the contract cost 3,250 pounds. It was extended at the rear in 1960 and again in 1973. The gallery is an early example in provincial Victoria of austere Neo-Classical "modern" design. Herman Hohaus produced a great number of small figurative sculptures, most of which were cast in bronze by the artist. Prometheus is one of the relatively small number of large scale works by the artist. Generally speaking he worked best on an intimate, small scale, but Prometheus is both a successful and a typical work, illustrating the artist's links with classical sculpture. A church of which the nave also functioned as a school (attended by the notorious Ned Kelly),which was erected under the supervision of George & Schneider between 1857 and 1862 with the west elevation derived from a Pugin design. The chancel was added in 1877 by T A Kelly, to whom the rather unfortunate sacristy has also been ascribed, and alterations to the building in recent years have detracted from its significance.
